Medicine Lake

Prepare to witness a geological puzzle at Medicine Lake, famously known as the "Disappearing Lake" of Jasper National Park. In early summer, it is a vast, brimming body of glacial blue water; but as autumn approaches, the water vanishes as if by magic, leaving behind a surreal landscape of mudflats. Indigenous peoples, witnessing this unexplained phenomenon, named it "Medicine" (meaning magic or spiritual power). The secret lies beneath the surface: the lake sits atop one of the world's largest underground karst systems. Like a giant bathtub with the plug pulled, the water drains into a network of subterranean caves, traveling miles underground before re-emerging in the canyon below. It is a place of wonder that defies logic and captivates the imagination.
