Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories

Nestled on the picturesque shores of Frame Lake in Yellowknife, the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories is more than an architectural masterpiece—it is the active, beating heart of the territory's government. Is it still operational? Yes, fully. This building is not a relic; it is the functioning seat of power for the Northwest Territories, operating under a rare and fascinating system known as "Consensus Government." unlike most parliaments, there are no political parties here. All 19 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) are elected as independents. In a true display of democracy, the Premier and Cabinet are not chosen by a party leader but are elected directly by the MLAs through a secret ballot. This unique system reflects the Indigenous tradition of gathering in a circle to make decisions respectfully and collectively. Visitors are invited to step into the stunning Circular Chamber, home to the ceremonial Mace crafted from a narwhal tusk and Northern diamonds. If visiting during a session, you can even watch from the public gallery as policies are debated in this distinctive, party-free environment. It is a rare opportunity to witness a political system that prioritizes cooperation over division.
