Welcome to Yellowknife – Gateway to the Aurora
The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, are a spectacular natural phenomenon caused by collisions between charged solar particles and gases in Earth's atmosphere. The name means “dawn of the north,” inspired by Aurora—the Roman goddess of dawn. Across cultures, the lights are often seen as symbols of good luck and spiritual energy. Watching them dance across the Arctic sky is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

  • Arrival & Pick-Up Service: We will arrange pick up service upon your arrival. Look for the Look for the Airport Pick-Up Guide wearing a red Canada Goose jacket with a polar bear logo on the chest, holding a sign that reads “Yellowknife Aurora Tour VIP.” A designated vehicle will transfer you to your hotel for check-in, where our staff will provide a short orientation. • Welcome to Yellowknife Sign: Located on the main route from Yellowknife Airport (YZF) to downtown, the Welcome to Yellowknife Sign is the first "must-visit" photo stop for every traveler. This iconic landmark signals your arrival in the heart of the Northwest Territories. The sign’s design incorporates elements of the region’s rich mining history, set against a backdrop of the unique sub-arctic boreal forest and rocky terrain. Whether you have just landed or are concluding your trip, this is the perfect spot to capture a classic souvenir photo, marking your footprint in the Aurora Capital of the World.
  • Yellowknife Visitor Centre: Situated in the prime downtown area, the Yellowknife Visitor Centre is the essential hub connecting travelers to this polar city. For most visitors, this is more than just a place for maps; it is a ceremonial stop. Here, you can receive the iconic "North of 60 Arrival Certificate" and a signature yellow knife-shaped pin—the ultimate souvenirs of your arctic expedition. Inside, diverse exhibits showcase the ecology and culture of the North. Whether you are consulting on the best Aurora viewing times or looking for hiking trails, the Visitor Centre is the perfect "warm-up base" before starting your Yellowknife adventure.
  • Old Town (Pass-by/ Scenic Drive):Old Town is not only the birthplace of Yellowknife but a living museum of the 1930s Gold Rush. Brave pioneers originally established this settlement along the rocky shores of Great Slave Lake—the 10th largest lake in the world—and the area retains a strong frontier atmosphere today. As you navigate the winding streets, you will see a vibrant mix of colorful traditional wooden cabins and modern architecture, each telling a legendary story of the past. This is the most vibrant community in Yellowknife, offering a glimpse into how locals live in harmony with nature. The area is also home to historic landmarks like the Wildcat Cafe and the famous fish restaurant, Bullock's Bistro. From unique architecture to local cuisine, Old Town is full of surprises and is an excellent location for photography.
  • Bush Pilots Monument: No trip to Yellowknife is complete without visiting the Bush Pilots Monument in Old Town. As the highest point in Yellowknife, this observation deck offers the city's best panoramic views. From here, you can gaze out over the entire downtown skyline and the magnificent expanse of Great Slave Lake. Beyond being a popular photo spot, this monument holds deep historical significance, dedicated to the brave bush pilots who lost their lives opening up the vast Northwest Territories. Every view from this summit is a tribute to these aviation heroes.

Fall Aurora Experience (October – November):Following dinner, gather in the hotel lobby for your evening Aurora Hunting tour (typically 10:00 PM – 2:00 AM, subject to weather). Day 3 YELLOWKNIFE — AURORA VIEWING

Overview

Cultural Encounters & Arctic Exploration
Today offers free time for you to explore Yellowknife’s rich cultural landmarks at your own pace. We highly recommend visiting the following attractions to deepen your understanding of the Arctic:

  • Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre:Often hailed as the "Northern Smithsonian," the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre is the definitive authority on the history and culture of the Northwest Territories. Situated on the picturesque shores of Frame Lake, this museum offers free admission and serves as the region's official archives. Inside, you will find a masterful blend of natural and human history narratives. Exhibits range from the ecological evolution of the Ice Age and taxidermy of unique polar wildlife to the millennia-old traditions and craftsmanship of the Dene, Inuit, and Métis peoples. The centre also comprehensively chronicles Yellowknife’s early Gold Rush era and the legendary stories of bush pilots. It is an essential stop to complement your natural Aurora experience with deep cultural knowledge.
  • Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly:Located in downtown Yellowknife, the Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly building offers a fascinating window into how this vast polar region governs itself. This magnificent structure showcases a unique architectural design that blends modern craftsmanship with Indigenous traditions, symbolizing the territory's proud system of "Consensus Government." Visitors can join a guided tour to step into the dignified circular Chamber, where you will witness the ceremonial Mace—crafted from 1.3 carats of diamonds and a narwhal tusk—and the authoritative Polar Bear hide rug. The rich exhibits detail the historical contributions of the Dene, Inuit, and Métis populations, as well as the political evolution from pioneer settlement to self-governance. It is a living museum that adds intellectual depth to your Arctic journey.
  • NWT Diamond Centre:While Yellowknife is famous as a sanctuary for the Northern Lights, it is also globally celebrated as the "Diamond Capital of North America." Since the discovery of world-class diamond deposits in 1991, the Northwest Territories has risen to become one of the world's most important diamond producers. At the NWT Diamond Centre, you will discover the city's transformation from a gold rush town to a modern diamond hub. Through engaging exhibits and demonstrations, you will gain insight into the complete journey of a diamond, from rough mining to precision cutting and polishing. The Canadian diamonds featured here are world-renowned for their "ethical mining" and flawless purity. Each stone carries the geological memory of the Arctic circle, serving as a souvenir even more eternal than the Aurora itself.
  • Fur Trade Exhibit:Long before diamonds and gold were discovered, the Fur Trade was the economic lifeblood of the Northwest Territories and the primary driver for European explorers venturing into the Arctic Circle. This exhibit acts as a time capsule, preserving this vital historical memory. Visitors can learn about the evolution from traditional hunting to modern fur management, understanding how strict regulations ensure the sustainable development of wildlife populations. Viewing the various furs and trapping tools on display, you will gain a profound appreciation for how hunting remains not just a traditional way of life for Indigenous communities, but a crucial link to their economic and cultural identity.
October to November:
Today is yours to explore, but if you wish to deeply experience the autumn charm of the Northwest Territories, we strongly recommend booking an optional Great Slave Lake Fishing & Boat Tour. As the deepest lake in Canada (614 meters) and the tenth largest in the world, Great Slave Lake offers breathtaking water vistas. Guided by Indigenous experts, you will cruise into the lake to track local wildlife, from soaring seagulls and wild ducks to sled dogs inhabiting the surrounding islands. The pristine, cold waters are also a paradise for anglers, home to massive Northern Pike and Whitefish. Experience the thrill of battling a big catch amidst the stunning lake and mountain scenery, connecting with the traditional local wisdom of living in harmony with the water. (Seating is limited; early booking is recommended).

Following dinner, gather in the hotel lobby at the designated time to board your transfer for the Aurora Hunting Tour (approx. 22:00 – 02:00, subject to weather). Tonight, you will visit our exclusive Sky Dome (Glass Igloo). Modeled after a traditional Inuit igloo and built with 166 panes of glass, this panoramic shelter allows for stunning external photography under the stars.

Winter (December to April):
Take advantage of your free time to explore the unique charm of the town. Our top recommendation is a visit to Old Town to dine at the internationally renowned Bullock's Bistro. This restaurant is synonymous with Yellowknife cuisine, famous for its character-filled decor and warm hospitality. The must-try dish is their signature Fish & Chips or pan-fried fish, made with fresh catches from Great Slave Lake and served with their secret sauce—it is a culinary experience worth queuing for. After a satisfying meal, explore the nearby boutique shops for unique Yellowknife souvenirs. If you prefer to stay indoors, revisit the Prince of Wales Museum or the Legislative Assembly to further immerse yourself in Indigenous culture and Gold Rush history.

Following dinner, gather in the hotel lobby at the designated time to board your transfer for the Aurora Hunting Tour (approx. 21:00 – 02:00, subject to weather). Tonight, your basecamp is a Warm Wooden Cabin in the wilderness. Relax with complimentary coffee, tea, and snacks while waiting for the lights to appear. Be sure to have your camera ready to capture the dazzling dance of the Aurora when it lights up the winter sky!
