Day 1 Vancouver — Rocky Mountaineer — Whistler

Overview

Rainforest to Whistler — Howe Sound & Granite Peaks
Your luxury rail adventure begins at the Vancouver. The Rocky Mountaineer departs promptly around 8:00 AM for the journey to Whistler. This segment is celebrated as "The Most Beautiful Rail Journey," tracing the rugged coastline of Howe Sound. The train travels past dramatic cliffs and lush temperate rainforests. As you pass Squamish, watch for the iconic Stawamus Chief—one of the largest and most spectacular granite monoliths in North America and a signature landmark of the region.
The first day's rail journey is relatively short, with the train arriving in Whistler around midday. This provides you with ample free time to explore this globally renowned ski and resort destination.

Journey Highlights

  • Howe Sound:This magnificent glacial fjord (glacial canyon) is the southernmost fjord in North America. Its landscape is defined by the dramatic contrast of steep, towering mountains plunging directly into the bay, covered by lush temperate rainforest. This area showcases the raw, pristine beauty of the Coastal Mountains.
  • Stawamus Chief: The Chief is a world-renowned, massive granite monolith that towers hundreds of meters high and is considered one of the globe's top rock-climbing destinations. It holds sacred significance in local Indigenous culture as the "Great Spiritual Mountain."
  • Squamish: Located at the head of Howe Sound, Squamish is famously known as the "Outdoor Recreation Capital of Canada." This vibrant town is renowned for activities such as windsurfing, kitesurfing, and world-class rock climbing, marking the scenic transition where coastal fjord landscapes meet inland mountain valleys.
  • Whistler: Whistler is a globally recognized ski and resort destination. As a host of the 2010 Winter Olympics, it features world-class slopes, luxury accommodations, and abundant year-round outdoor activities. The town itself offers a charming, pedestrian-friendly, Swiss-Alpine resort atmosphere.

Day 2 Whistler — Rocky Mountaineer — Quesnel

Overview
The Gold Rush Trail — From Valley Farms to the Cariboo Plateau
In the morning, assemble at your hotel to take the pre-arranged shuttle to the Pemberton Train Station, where you will board the Rocky Mountaineer train for your journey to the charming rural town of Quesnel, the gateway to the North Cariboo region.
Today’s route showcases a breathtaking diversity of landscapes: from the lush farmland and river valleys of the Pemberton Valley, through the near desert-like conditions of the Fraser Canyon, and finally onto the rolling hills and vast ranchlands of the Cariboo Plateau. Throughout the day, your Rocky Mountaineer onboard guide will provide detailed commentary on the history of the 19th Century Gold Rush—a period of dreams and instant fortunes that shaped British Columbia.

Journey Highlights
  • Pemberton Valley: This valley offers expansive farmland views framed by soaring mountains. It marks the scenic transition from the high alpine resort area of Whistler to the drier, agricultural interior of BC.

  • Fraser River Canyon: Experience one of Canada’s most rugged and spectacular canyons. This deep gorge, with its sheer rock walls and the powerful Fraser River rushing below, showcases the primal strength of the interior wilderness, forming a stark contrast to the coastal greenery.

  • Cariboo Gold Rush History: The region is the historic epicenter of the 1860s Cariboo Gold Rush, which drew tens of thousands of prospectors. The scenery narrates the legendary tales of pioneers, exploration, and the challenging history of building the Cariboo Wagon Road.

  • Quesnel: This historic town on the banks of the Fraser River served as the last major supply and resting stop before the primary goldfields. It retains many historical traces from the gold rush era, making it the perfect starting point for exploring the Cariboo region's pioneer history.

Day 3 Quesnel — Rocky Mountaineer — Jasper

Overview
Highest Peak & Wildlife — From Cariboo to Jasper
This morning, you will assemble at your hotel and board the shuttle to rejoin the Rocky Mountaineer train, continuing your journey eastward into the majestic Canadian Rockies and Jasper National Park. The train will follow the Fraser River north to Prince George, then travel east through the dense forests of northern British Columbia, a rich habitat for wildlife, including Moose, Caribou, and Bears.
As the train enters the Rocky Mountain Trench, you will be surrounded by the steep peaks of the Rockies to the north and the Cariboo Mountains to the south. The ascent continues past Mount Robson (3,954 meters), the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies. Finally, the train crosses Yellowhead Pass, marking your entry into Alberta. Your rail journey concludes upon evening arrival in Jasper Town, where Rocky Mountaineer will provide your transfer to your overnight hotel.
*Please refer to your sent itinerary and accommodation voucher for your hotel name and address in Jasper.

Journey Highlights
  • Mount Robson: The ultimate emblem of the Canadian Rockies, standing at 3,954 meters (12,972 feet) —the highest peak in the range. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Mount Robson is a museum of natural ecology, boasting a magnificent landscape interwoven with glaciers, alpine lakes, and waterfalls. It is the starting point of the renowned Berg Lake Trail and a primal sanctuary for wildlife like marmots and mountain goats.

  • Pyramid FallsThis natural wonder is formed as the glacier-fed Pyramid Creek plunges over a sheer drop and merges into the Thompson River, creating a distinctive, fan-shaped cascade that resembles a pyramid. Although the surrounding ecological reserve remains closed, the train offers a clear view of the falls as they dramatically descend beneath the tracks. Its massive water curtain is particularly spectacular during the winter or high-volume seasons.

  • Yellowhead Pass: A historically significant mountain pass in the Canadian Rockies, marking the boundary between Alberta and British Columbia and serving as a key western entrance to Jasper National Park. The pass is named after Pierre Bostonais, a fur trader known for his distinctive yellow hair, leading to the lasting name "Yellowhead."
